The project to restore the facade of Bedford Depot and improve handicap accessibility to the first floor is in its final stages. New window units and doors were installed, a platform and ramp were built, and the exterior was painted. In addition, the Town installed new cooling and heating systems so that window air conditioners would not be necessary. A new handicap-accessible restroom is now under construction on the first floor. The Facilities Department will soon create "punch list" for the contractor to identify any remaining tasks and clean-up. The DPW will paint and install new train order signal masts to replace the original masts that were determined to be structurally unsound.
November 15, 2014 Freight House Restrooms Open on Weekdays in Fall and Spring
A donation from an anonymous benefactor is making it possible to have the Freight House public restrooms open on weekdays during November 2014 and April 2015, times of the year when they are usually open only on the weekends. The funds will be used to pay for a custodian to clean the restrooms and stock them with tissue rolls and hand soap. The restrooms will be closed entirely over the winter.
With Bedford Depot's facade siding, handicap-accessible platform and window installations substantially complete, attention is now focussed on exterior painting of the building in the old Boston & Maine "cream and maroon" color scheme.
In recent weeks, Bedford's contractor has installed new tall vertical window units, doors, siding and trim on the Depot Building. Painting of the exterior is planned to begin the middle of the week of October 5. To inquire about renting a unit in Bedford Depot, please contact Joseph Piantedosi at 781-275-6077.

News from the Bedford DPW: Starting Wednesday, August 6, 2014, the Bedford DPW will be working on the Minuteman Bikeway between Depot Park and Wiggins Avenue. We expect to mill in the morning and patch the trenches in the afternoon so that the surface is smooth at the end of the day. There will be a police detail with the crew to direct users around the job site. This work should take about four to five days. On Monday, August 18, the full width of the bike path will be milled. This process will take approximately two days. We are scheduled to repave on Wednesday, August 20, for an additional two days. During this work, the bikeway will be closed during the day due to the heavy equipment and trucks backing down the trail. Bikeway repairs in Bedford

March 24, 2010 Surfacing Planned for the Reformatory Branch Trail
At Bedford's Annual Town Meeting on March 23, voters amended and approved an article to design an asphalt-surfaced trail upon the Reformatory Branch beginning at a point near Railroad Avenue. The article was amended to extend the design of the improvements beyond Concord Road/Route 62 to the Concord town line. In a subsequent article, voters approved the expenditure of $210,000 in Community Preservation funds to pay for the 25% design plans. These actions do not necessarily mean that the Reformatory Branch Trail would soon be paved. Concurrent with preparation of the 25% design, the Town intends to seek Federal and/or state funding for construction. The estimated construction cost is $2 million.

February 23, 2007 Freight House Reopening Remains on Hold
Bedford Freight House remains closed as the building awaits renovation by the Massachusetts Highway Department (MHD). It appears to us that the soonest the building might reopen is sometime in 2008. The latest word from the state is that bids for their $453,000 project will be opened in April. The next steps would include selection of the general contractor and filed sub-bidders, execution of contracts, and then authorization from MHD to initiate the work.

June 21, 2005 Intersection Project Is Progressing
In Spring 2005, the Bedford DPW awarded an $839,000 contract to Charles Contracting Company of Watertown, Massachusetts, to rebuild the South Road/Railroad Avenue/Loomis Street intersection. Crews will be at work during the summer and through autumn. Photo These roads cross in front of Depot Park. Photo The redesign will provide new turning lanes, 10-foot-wide concrete sidewalks that link the Minuteman Bikeway and Narrow-Gauge Rail-Trail, and signal-controlled crosswalks. Pedestrians and cyclists should find it safer to cross the road once the project is complete. Photo As of June 21, the contractor has removed most of the old pavement in preparation for a base layer of asphalt. Photo The old Lexington Branch rails across South Road are now gone. Consider how many trains traversed this iron over the years! Photo
